Family caregivers and the aging of the person with Intellectual Disabilities: Implications to care

Resumo: Aging of individuals with Intellectual Disability (ID) accompanies the increasing life expectancy of the general population. The atypical aging exhibited by this population calls for provision of special care. Care for these individuals during this phase of life is invariably provided by elderly caring for elderly, i.e. family caregivers.   The profile of these caregivers tends to differ owing to the presence of concerns other than the provision of care. Therefore, professionals working with this population should guide, plan and implement actions that embrace these differences. Thus, the present study involved an unprejudiced analysis of the provision of care by family caregivers to aging individuals with ID. Results point to the need for multiprofessional involvement and further studies exploring difference and peculiarities in aging individuals with ID.

Results point to the need for multiprofessional involvement and further studies exploring difference and peculiarities in aging individuals with ID.  O envelhecimento da pessoa com Deficiência Intelectual (DI) é um fato que acompanha a crescente expectativa de vida da população em geral e, devido ao envelhecimento atípico presente nessa população, a prestação de cuidados exige um olhar diferenciado e um esforço contínuo por parte da pessoa que cuida. Este artigo descreve o perfil do cuidador familiar informal da pessoa com DI que envelhece, possibilitando uma reflexão sobre a prestação desses cuidados. Na metodologia, utilizou-se um questionário que envolve a prestação de cuidados por parte dos cuidadores familiares informais. Participaram da amostra 30 cuidadores. Os dados obtidos foram coletados no Serviço de Envelhecimento da APAE DE SÃO PAULO, entre fevereiro de 2013 e maio de 2014.  Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram que a maioria das pessoas nessa fase de vida mora com os familiares, preferencialmente com a mãe com média de idade de 77 anos e, na ausência desta, a prestação desses cuidados é realizada pelo pai e/ou irmãos. Quando verificado o grau de parentesco do cuidador principal, nota-se que a mãe mantém-se como a cuidadora informal até o fim da vida, não partilhando esses cuidados com outros cuidadores formais.
