Resumo: | We are in the middle of a dark night in 1593. In the middle of a dark midnight, because we have documented the historical facts. The body of Saint John of the Cross is moved stealthily by uninhabited people from Úbeda, where he had died, to Segovia. The court bailiff, don Juan de Medina, guards the remains together with the guards who lead him in a litter. When they arrive at Martos, a man appears to them who shouts at them in loud voices: "Where are you taking that deceased, rascals? Leave the body of the friar you are carrying..." (Pasquau 1960: 2). The apparition "caused the bailiff and his companions a great fright, and their hair became terrifying" (Fernández Navarrete 1819: 78-79). Further down the road another man appears, who once again asks the entourage for what they were carrying and insists on questioning them. In the midst of so many tense encounters, the pallbearer notices that bright lights surround the small box that contains the saint's body. |
