Resumo: This study aims to find out the determinants of Brazilian fertilizer demand between 1970 and 2010. The importance of this study demand is closely related to the need of growing farmer s yield, as the country is recognized to be one of the major world leaders of food production. National and regional demand equations have been estimated through OLS and Johansen Cointegration. In general, the results have pointed to an inelastic demand to price variation, either in the short and long term. The variables IPR and harvested area have showed great importance in this study, as Rural Credit has not been statistically significant. Using VAR methodology, it has been possible to confirm the existence of common cycles between Southern, Center and North/Northeast regions, with strong interrelation, mainly from the Center to the other two regions.

A relev?ncia desse estudo faz-se mister frente ? necessidade de crescimento na produtividade agr?cola, em sendo o pa?s um dos l?deres mundiais na produ??o de alimentos. Estimou-se a equa??o de demanda a n?vel nacional e regional, fazendo-se uso de MQO e cointegra??o de Johansen. Em geral, os resultados apontaram para a inelasticidade da demanda frente a varia??es no pre?o, tanto no curto quanto no longo-prazo. As vari?veis IPR e ?rea colhida apresentaram grande import?ncia no estudo, enquanto que o cr?dito rural n?o foi significativo estatisticamente.
