As motivações inerentes a esta decisão têm efeitos ao nível do bem-estar, que podem depender do grau em que o indivíduo consegue ter um estatuto relacional compatível com os seus desejos e objectivos. Estas motivações têm um papel central nesta investigação, na qual se procurou analisar as causas e as consequências da decisão de ficar solteiro ou investir numa relação. Numa primeira parte deste estudo, desenvolveu-se o Inventário de Motivações para Ficar Solteiro ou Investir numa Relação (IM-SR) e, numa segunda parte, este mesmo inventário foi aplicado a uma amostra de 444 participantes, juntamente com outras escalas. Os resultados encontrados apoiam a validade do instrumento criado, que permitiu conhecer diferentes facetas das motivações para ficar solteiro ou investir numa relação, e estão de acordo com as hipóteses de que o estilo de vinculação, a auto-estima e o estilo de orientações causais influenciam estas motivações. Por sua vez, estas motivações influenciam o bem-estar, sendo essa relação, em alguns casos, moderada pelo estatuto relacional e, noutros, mediada pelo carácter voluntário desse estatuto. O carácter voluntário do estatuto relacional está fortemente relacionado com algumas motivações de tipo mais autónomo, associadas a um maior bem-estar. Pelo contrário, uma percepção de pouca voluntariedade da escolha do estatuto relacional e pouca satisfação com o mesmo está normalmente associada a motivações com um menor grau de autonomia e a um menor bem-estar. Além disso, em termos gerais, verificou-se que as motivações, para ficar solteiro ou investir numa relação, com um baixo grau de autonomia não são adaptativas, uma vez que estão associadas a um menor nível de bem-estar, independentemente do estatuto relacional.The decision to stay single or invest in a romantic relationship emerges as a more and more visible issue in society, since there’s a growing diversity of lifestyles. The motivations inherent in this decision have effects on well-being, which may depend on the degree to which the individual can have a relational status commensurate with their desires and goals. These motivations have a central role in this research, which sought to analyze the causes and consequences of the decision to stay single or invest in a relationship. In the first part of this study, an Inventory of Motivations to Stay Single or Invest in a Relationship (IM-SR) was developed and, in a second part, this same inventory was applied to a sample of 444 participants, with other scales. The results support the validity of the instrument developed, which allowed the knowledge of different facets of the motivations to stay single or invest in a relationship, and are consistent with the hypothesis that the attachment style, self-esteem and orientations causality style influence these motivations. In turn, these motivations influence the well-being in such as that, in some cases, this relation is moderated by the relational status and, in others, is mediated by the voluntary nature of the aforementioned status. The voluntary nature of the relational status is strongly related to some more autonomous types of motivation, associated with greater well-being. On the contrary, a low perception of choice of the relational status and low satisfaction with it, is normally associated with motivations with a minor degree of autonomy and with a lower well-being.
