Purpose: The main objective of this study was to analyze the perception of the family functioning in families with anorexic patients, the body image and the eating behaviors and attitudes of the anorexic patient. Methodology: A total of 32 families and 109 participants were included in this study. Patitents were followed in the service of Pedopsychiatry of the Pediatric Hospital - CHUC. The instruments were the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale (FACES-IV), Contour Drawing Rating Scale (CDRS), Children?s Eating Attitudes Test (TAACA) and the socio-demographic and complementary data questionnaire. Results: Families perceive themselves as balanced (cohesive and flexible), with low family satisfaction and moderate and low communication. The patients, compared to the other family members, perceive the family as moderately rigid. Patients who attend the third cycle have more problematic eating behaviors, as well as patients who have been followed for less than six months, the patients that are medicated, those who have been hospitalized, and, these, also have a greater dissatisfaction with body image. Conclusion: Families with an anorexic patient perceive high cohesion and flexibility, despite family satisfaction and low communication. This data contradicts some of the clinical theories, explaining anorexia and family functioning, were problems in cohesion - tendency to emmeshment - and in flexibility - tendency to rigidness. |
