Resumo: Over the last few years, sound and music practices during the silent film period have received an increasing attention from the academic community, both in film studies and musicology. In the context of the thematic issue on “Music, sound and the moving image”, Aniki interviewed Claus Tieber and Anna K. Windish, researchers at the University of Salzburg and editors of The Sounds of Silent Films: New Perspectives on History, Theory and Practice, the proceedings of an international conference held in 2013 at Kiel University. Tieber and Windish are, respectively, principal investigator and research assistant of the project “The Sound of Silents. Sound and Music in Viennese Cinemas, 1896-1930”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Sound and Music in Viennese Cinemas, 1896-1930”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).Nos últimos anos, as práticas musicais e sonoras do período do cinema mudo têm despertado uma atenção crescente por parte da comunidade académica, tanto no domínio dos estudos fílmicos como no da musicologia. A emergência de redes interdisciplinares, como “The Sounds of Early Cinema in Britain” (Brown e Davison 2013) e o projecto de investigação “Cabiria” em Itália (Colturato 2014), contribuíram para alargar o âmbito deste campo de estudos, revelando a importância das especificidades nacionais, regionais e locais na construção do cinema dos primeiros tempos enquanto experiência auditiva. No contexto do número temático “Música, som e a imagem em movimento”, a Aniki entrevistou Claus Tieber e Anna K. Windish, ambos investigadores na Universidade de Salzburgo e editores do volume The Sounds of Silent Films: New Perspectives on History, Theory and Practice, que resultou de um congresso internacional organizado na Universidade de Kiel em 2013. Tieber e Windish são, respectivamente, o investigador principal e a assistente de investigação do projecto “The Sound of Silents. Sound and Music in Viennese Cinemas, 1896-1930”, financiado pela FWF, a agência pública austríaca de apoio à investigação científica, e insistem, nesta entrevista, na necessidade de um trabalho colaborativo entre especialistas do cinema e da música, de modo a ultrapassar as tradicionais divisões disciplinares. Segundo eles, o foco dos estudos sobre música no cinema deve ser deslocado da abordagem de filmes individuais e da análise textual, para abranger uma perspectiva histórico-cultural mais ampla, que considere o cinema como um “evento” (Altman) e se interesse pelas formas de exibição e de performance, pelas idiossincrasias históricas e geográficas, assim como pelas condições sociais e económicas da produção cinematográfica. O estudo da música e do som no cinema deverá assim ser integrado numa “história cultural dos média” mais geral, que tome em consideração os “complexos processos inter- e transmediáticos de negociação, fusão e hibridação” que definem a experiência cinematográfica.
