Objetives: The present study aims to analyze the association between the depressive symptoms and the structural, functional and relational-contextual characteristics of the personal social networks of the elderly population. Methodology: To assess the variables, we used a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale short form 15 (GDS 15) (Yesaves et al, 1983; Almeida & Almeida, 1999) to measure the depressive symptoms, and the Personal Social Network Analysis Tool (IARSP- elderly) (Guadalupe, 2010; Guadalupe & Vicente, 2012) to assess the dimensions of the personal social network. Participants: Our sample includes 317 Portuguese elderly people. The majority are women (63.7%), aged between 75 and 85 years old (44.5%); married (50.5%) and with basic school education (51.1%).The majority of the elderly have children ( 85.8%), live in their own home (77%) and don't beneficiate from social services (67.2 %). Results: The results showed that older women (p = 0.003), aged between 75 and 85 years old (p <0.001), widowed (p <0.001) and without support from social services (p = 0.001) are those that have a higher average of depressive symptomatology perception. These are the one that reveal to be less satisfied with their social network (p <0.001). In the other hand, the elderly without depressive symptoms have a higher average in the material and instrumental support (p = 0.037), in the informational support (p = 0.001), in the social company (p = 0.004), access to new bonds (p <0.001), reciprocity of support (p <0.001) and are "very" satisfied with their social network (p <0.001). Conclusions: Our study shows that the personal social networks of elderly people do not differentiate at the structural and contextual level between those who present depressive symptoms and those who do not present depressive symptoms, but are differentiated at the functional level. Elderly without depressive symptoms have perceived higher levels of social support in material and instrumental support (p = 0.037), in informational support (p = 0.001), and in social company (p = 0.004), access to new bonds (p <0.001), reciprocity of support (p <0.001) and satisfaction with to their social network (p <0.001). The relevance of depressive symptoms in the elderly in Portugal and the importance of their personal social networks, combined with empirical evidence, advise the promotion and the development of psychological strategies to promote more mental health-promoting and supporting social networks. |
