Partimos assim da necessidade primordial de apreender a origem do conceito, que remonta às indagações formais do homem pré-histórico e o modo de como este se apropria do espaço através da construção, tentando alcançar uma compreensão da circunstância física e intelectual que compele a sua acção. Posteriormente estudamos os exemplos egípcio e grego, analisando primeiramente a relação indissociável entre as suas concepções cosmogónicas e a sua paisagem, e como esta relação se manifesta em matérias tangíveis, em formas construídas. Durante este período, na ausência de conhecimento preciso e objectivo, abre-se caminho a uma interpretação mítico-poética do meio e dos fenómenos nele ocorrentes, favorecendo a sua apreciação e distinção qualitativa. Interpretação esta que é progressivamente abandonada a par da ascensão do empirismo e da razão instrumental, que estende ao espaço uma interpretação tendencialmente quantitativa e técnica. Esta alteração dos valores espaciais que é paralela à renovação e aparecimento de novas convicções ideológicas e circunstâncias operacionais, defere diferentes modos de operação e revela as suas influências no cambio das formas. Nomeadamente o final do século XIX comporta alterações decisivas sobre os hábitos e paradigmas da sociedade estabelecidos até então, introduzindo importantes rupturas com as concepções precedentes. Tentamos perceber as origens e implicações de um novo modelo de entendimento espacial que se ergue no início do século XX, que propicia o nascimento do Movimento Moderno e consigo a revisão dos ideais arquitectónicos. Estudamos o seu desenvolvimento e posteriormente tentamos perceber os motivos que levaram à sua crise, durante a década de sessenta, assim como as respostas que lhe foram dadas. Abordamos neste contexto o trabalho teórico de Christian Norberg-Schulz e a sua proposta de uma fenomenologia de arquitectura que visa a recuperação de uma interpretação qualitativa do espaço e do lugar, tendo por base as indagações do filósofo Martin Heidegger. Abordamos ainda a recente introdução dos meios e possibilidades tecnológicas que alteraram de forma incontornável a nossa relação com o mundo e o modo de como comunicamos a seu respeito, e que levantam novos desafios à interpretação e manutenção do conceito de lugar. Percebendo as suas implicações tentamos alcançar uma situação corrente do tema proposto, a sua validade e aplicabilidade no mundo contemporâneo. Finalmente dissertamos sobre as questões de constância e cambio inerentes à presença, ao habitar o tempo.This dissertation has as its main theme the origin and development of the concept of place in its historical path and its correlation with the practice of architecture. Therefore, we start with the primordial need to apprehend the concept’s origin, that goes back to the formal inquiries of the prehistoric man and the way he takes the space through construction, trying ro reach a comprehension of the physical and intellectual circumstance that compel its action. We then study the Greek and Egyptian examples, starting by analyzing the indissociable relation between their cosmogonic conceptions and their Iandscape, and how this relation rnanifests itself in tangible matters, in constructed forms. During this period, in the absence of precise and objective knowledge, the way is opened to a mythical-poetical interpretation of the means and phenomena that occur in it, favoring its appreciation and qualitative distinction. This interpretarion is progressively put aside as the rise of empiricism and instrumental reason takes place, which gives space a tendentially quantitative and technical interpretation. This change in perception of the space values, which goes along with the renovation and emergence of new ideological convictions and operational circumstances, permeates different ways of operating and reveals its influences in the exchange of the shapes. Namely, the late 19th century encompasses decisive alterations concerning the habits and paradigms of society that had been previously established, introducing important ruptures with the previous conceptions. We try to understand the origins and implications of a new model of space understanding that arises in the beginning of the 20th century that enables the birth of the Modern Movement and with it the revision of the architectonical ideals. We study its development and later try to understand the reasons that led to its crisis during the sixties, as well as the answers that were given to this matter. We approach, in this context, the theoretical work of Christian Norberg-Schuiz and his proposal of a phenomenology of architecture, that envisions the recovery of a qualitative interpretation of space and place, having as basis the work of the philosopher Martin Heidegger. We also approach the recent introduction of the means and technological possibilities that changed in an essential way our relationship with the world, and so the way we communicate about it, which gave to rhe interpretation and maintenance of the concept of place new challenges to face. Understanding these implications we try to acknowledge the current state of the proposed theme, as its validity and applicability in the contemporary world.
