Foster Care essential goal is to remove children from danger, ensuring their physical and psychological recovery and their integral development. Th e social educator is an agent of social change in society, the Foster Family is a means or an opportunity to change the lives of children and families in their communities. Th e study ‘Foster Care in Porto District’, described in this paper, intends to analyze, in the geographical area under study, the essential features of Portuguese foster care, the participants that it mobilizes, the diff erent stages, the degree of satisfaction that the experience provides and the implications that the placement brings to the comprised children’s development. Th is study adapted the research developed by Del Valle, López, Montserrat and Bravo in 2008, entitled ‘El Acogimiento Familiar en España. Una evaluación de resultados’, to portuguese reality. Th e project is developed by INED, Centre for Research and Innovation in Education, of Escola Superior de Educação of Instituto Politécnico do Porto. In 2011, in the district of Porto, the geographical area covered by the study, were more than a half of children’s family placements in foster care in Portugal (289 out of 553 children).
