Sendo uma região tão crucial, quer pela sua localização quer pelos seus recursos energéticos, são várias as potências do sistema internacional que se esforçam em preservar os seus interesses regionais. Uma das formas mais práticas para tal é através de guerras por procuração, em que os atores externos evitam o seu envolvimento direto, financiando as forças locais. Assim, tal como ocorreu durante a Guerra Fria, no século XX, assiste-se hoje a um conflito no Médio Oriente que envolve atores locais, regionais e globais, gerando uma complexa interdependência de interesses. O principal objetivo da presente dissertação é analisar as atuais relações geopolíticas no Médio Oriente, resultantes da Primavera Árabe. Iniciando pela Guerra Fria, realiza-se um exercício de comparação deste momento histórico e da sua materialização no Médio Oriente, a “Guerra Fria Árabe”, conceito criado por Malcolm Kerr, com o cenário atual. De forma a aprofundar este estudo da Nova Guerra Fria do Médio Oriente, selecionou--se a Guerra Civil Síria como estudo de caso. Recorrendo ao quadro teórico-concetual do Neorrealismo, analisa-se o papel os atores mais relevantes neste conflito: os EUA, a Turquia, o Irão e a Rússia. O estudo conclui que a Guerra Civil Síria efetivamente abriu um novo capítulo nas relações na região do Médio Oriente e, consequentemente, no sistema internacional. As alterações foram ocorrendo ao longo do início do século XXI, a começar pela intervenção americana no Iraque e Afeganistão, desequilibrando a balança de poder. O fortalecimento da retórica política do Irão também levou ao aumento do sectarismo e consequente polarização do Médio Oriente, agravada pela eclosão da Guerra Civil Síria.For decades, the Middle East has been considered one of the most complex regions of the globe, an area characterized by moments of tension and war. Several powers of the international system strive to keep their interests in the region, as it is so crucial due to its location and its resources. One of the easiest ways to defend their interests is through proxy wars, by financing local fighting groups, thus avoiding direct involvement. In this model of conflict, the main local fighters look for support from actors whose interests are at stake and are economically able to invest in a war. As seen during the 20th century Cold War, there is today a high number of clashes in the Middle East, involving local, regional and global actors and generating, thus, a complex interdependence of interests. The main purpose of the present dissertation is to analyze the current geopolitical relations in the Middle East resulting from the Arab Spring, a set of popular upheaval felt in the region. Starting with the Cold War, a comparison is made of that historical moment and of its specific in the Middle East, the so-called “Arab Cold War”, a concept created by Malcolm Kerr, with the current scenario. In order to deepen this study of the New Cold War in the Middle East, the Syrian Civil War was selected as case study. Finally, the most important actors in this conflict, the USA, Turkey, Iran and Russia, were analyzed through the Neorrealism lens. This study concludes that the Syrian Civil War did indeed open a new chapter in geopolitcal relations in the Middle East and, consequently, in the international system. The modifications took place in the early 21st century, starting with the American interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, upending the balance of power.
