Resumo: This text tries to accomplish three aims. Firstly, to present the story and aim of the project that originated the texts presented in this volume of PSICOLOGIA--the project "O descobrimento do Brasil 500 anos depois: memória social e representações dos Portugueses e brasileiros [The discovery of Brazil 500 years later: social memory and representations of Portuguese and Brazilians]. Secondly, to propose briefly the framework that underlies this project--the analysis of the relations betweensocial representations and social memory. O primeiro é apresentar a história e os objectivos do projecto de cuja realização resultaram os artigos que integram este número temático da revista Psicologia – o projecto O descobrimento do Brasil 500 anos depois: memória social e representações de portugueses e brasileiros. O segundo é propor um breve enquadramento para a questão que estruturou este estudo – a análise das relações entre representações sociais e memória social – de modo a esclarecer desde logo a lógica que presidiu à escolha dos objectivos específicos do projecto. O terceiro é esboçar uma síntese dos artigos temáticos que se seguem, e articular as suas principais conclusões.
