Resumo: Arterial stiffness is considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, which results primarily from arteriosclerosis, secondarily from other modifiable risk factors and atherosclerosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a cardiac rehabilitation program based on exercise training during 8 weeks, on arterial stiffness in male diagnosed with with coronary disease,. In this study, 84 patients were randomized to either an exercise group or a control group 4 weeks after acute myocardial infarction. The rehabilitation program consisted of 8 weeks of aerobic exercise at 70-85% of maximal heart rate, 3 times a week, in addition to usual medical care. The main outcome evaluated in this study was the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV-cf), in addition to the analysis of other indicators of arterial stiffness. The results of this study shows that the exercise rehabilitation program was not able to significantly improve PWV-cf (p = 0.064). However, there were significant differences in functional capacity [duration of exercise test (p = 0.007); MET (p = 0.019)] and in the lipid profile [triglycerides (p = 0.037); HDL (p = 0.045)]. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that the physical exercise rehabilitation program was not able to produce significant improvements PWV-cf in male individuals with coronary heart disease.
