São Jorge da Mina and Macaoa comparative reappraisal of European encountersPortuguese EmpireGovernanceport citiesEarly Modern HistorySovereigntySDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesUIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020The early modern Portuguese empire presents a variety of case studies to explore the process of border making experienced in direct response to European activity and imperialism. Considering its scale and dispersion, the Portuguese empire shows both fluidity and rigidity of borders and the strategies of control and security taken in response to or within their establishments. The Portuguese factory of São Jorge da Mina, that was built in 1482, and Macao, one of the most important European harbours in Asia in the 1550s, offer valuable insights into early Portuguese/non-European relations. Both cases constitute a concession of a limited and well-defined land where the Portuguese could stay, with full control, resulting from agreement with the terms stipulated by the local authorities. Considering the asymmetries of historiography when treating the two cases, rather than a direct comparison, this article aims to bring some reflections on these experiences as paradigms of the limit of action of the early modern Portuguese empire.CHAM - Centro de HumanidadesRUNBoscariol, Mariana A.2022-12-19T22:13:40Z2021-08-272021-08-27T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article26application/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/146407eng2052-7217PURE: 48331109https://doi.org/10.5871/jba/009s4.032info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T05:27:29Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/146407Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:52:36.997942Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
