Maritime law has a giant extension, encompassing the same series of details that have been the source of many disagreements at the doctrinal level. The present dissertation aims to define as figures of credit privileges, mortgages on ships and stops on ships, cargo and freight. Credit privileges, as hidden privileges that they are, have an unhappy doctrinal expression for delaying the granting of credit. Like mortgages on ships, they have suffered over the decades with the hidden character of credit privileges. Despite the Portuguese legislation, it tried to provide some security to mortgage creditors, make some legislative changes, it is certain that the results were not expected. The control over ships, as a precautionary measure specifies that it is, has very serious effects for the shipowner or charterer, measures in which ship can stop stopped, continuing to win the fees in the port where it is stopped, as well as practiced in the voyage, among so many other expenses which include the permanence of a ship without assets. These are the figures that this study aims to appreciate.
