Resumo: This text discusses several dimensions of grammaticalrefl ection in L1 learning, trying to answer why, when and how to teachgrammar, questions that are closely related. After analyzing the currentsituation in Basic and Secondary Education in Portugal, it is proposed thata systematic pedagogical practice, able to relate grammar to discourse,literary or not, and endowed with a technical and a laboratory component,will allow the awareness of grammar by students and will tend to increasetheir linguistic competence.
