Motivations and expectations of students in vocational evening education: a study in a school in Lubango-Angola

The present study fits the research carried forward in the context of a vocational secondary school in Lubango, Angola. In this paper, we intend to identify and analyses the factors and the motivations of students of this school to choose the educational institution and the courses they are in, as well as their expectations regarding their attendance at school and their future. The participants of the study are 72, 12th grade students pursuing vocational courses of Information Technology (IT), Accounting and Management, Public Administration and Secretariat. The theoretical Foundation of the study is based on the theory of Self-determination. The methodology of the study is extensive and exploratory, supported by the collection of data through a questionnaire survey. A Descriptive Statistics analysis was carried out, making use of software SPSS version 25. The results allowed to conclude that the choice of the institution and the courses were determined by factors, motivations and expectations with an underlying instrumental or extrinsic dimension, namely associated to the prestige of the school and the profession to which the courses may potentially give access to.
