«O mundo que tomasse conta dos meus despojos»: Inventário da obra O mundo à Minha Procura do espólio de Ruben A

The report hereby presented aims to be a depiction of the work I carried out as an intern for the Archive of Contemporary Portuguese Culture (ACPC), a department of Portugal’s National Library. The internship was mandatory towards the conclusion of the Master in Editing and Publishing, attended by me at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University of Lisbon. The internship was guided by Dr. Fátima Lopes, head of the ACPC and took place in the Rare Book and Manuscript Reading Room. The task that was proposed to me consisted, firstly, in choosing a Portuguese writer whose estate was held by ACPC but had not yet been subject to inventory, the purpose of the internship being the preparation of the inventory for one of the writer’s works. I chose Ruben A., a writer I did not know, and his work O Mundo à minha procura, following Dr. Fátima’s suggestion. For about three months I committed myself to getting acquainted with the manuscripts in Ruben A.’s estate that referred to the work in case. I also got familiar with the work’s printed version, enabling me thus to organize the manuscripts, to determine the genetic process of the text and to prepare the inventory and describe the manuscripts. The initial part of the report points towards the history of ACPC and briefly exposes what the archival work is. Follows an introduction to the writer’s life, to his estate and the chosen work. The third chapter is the most important and the largest in the report. It aims to explain clearly the work I carried out with the manuscripts and to provide a general idea to the reader of the contents of the documents, relying on specific examples when necessary. In the final part of the text, I present a few problems that occurred and reflect on the whole experience.
