Dutch Nautical Sciences in the Golden Age: the Portuguese Influence

Resumo: It was a revolt against the king of Spain who was later also king of Portugal that created the Dutch Republic. Success at sea through the application of various aspects of nautical science, including shipbuilding and navigation, generated prosperity in the small state and ensured its survival. Dutch mariners and shipwrights owed a great debt to their Iberian counterparts. Even though the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were marked by decline in the peninsula features of knowledge, approaches and practices in nautical science borrowed from Spain and, even more, Portugal formed a basis for the prosperity in the United Netherlands.
