Resumo: This dissertation aims at analysing music as a form of subversion in Tom Stoppard’s play Rock ‘N’ Roll. After a short summary of Stoppard’s career, the bands and songs chosen by him are analysed from the perspective of subversion against censorship and totalitarian regimes, relating them to the plot. The dissertation also focuses on the specific case of the Czech band the Plastic People of the Universe and its importance to the history of Czechoslovakia between 1968 and 1990.
