During the First World War, in 1916, Portugal was a neutral country when the Allies claimed for help. All the German ships settled on Tagus river were kept there and adapted to the war needs. “Lahneck” changed its name to “Gil Eanes” and was committed to troops transport and to give assistance for fishing boats. Years after the old “Gil Eanes” was asking for substitute and an original ship was built on Vienna do Castelo shipyard, with the modern knowledge for a hospital-ship. The new ship was raised in 1955, mainly to assist the Portuguese cod fish fleet, acting on New Found Land seas. Nowadays it returned to Viana do Castelo docks and after rehabilitation it turned to a ship museum and a student’s inn, to keep the memories of this traditional Portuguese fishermen activity. L´histoire des navire-hôpitaux portugais trouve ses origines pendant les Découvertes. En 1916, en pleine Première Grande Guerre, les alliés demandent une aide au Portugal qui était jusqu´alors un pays neutre. Les bateaux allemands qui étaient garés sur le Tage, s´adaptérent aux besoins de la Guerre. Le “Lahneck” a reçu, à cette époque le nom de “Gil Eannes”, fit le transport des troupes et donna assistance aux bateaux de pêche. Le temps passa et la dégradation du navire conduisit à la construction d´un projet prevoyant les nécessités et les expériences d'un navire-hôpital. Le nouveau “Gil Eannes” fut lancé à l'eau en 1955, ayant comme mission l'assistance médicale aux pêcheurs portugais de la morue active dans les mers de Terre Nouvelle.
