Revised -ASCS-R; Irons & Gilbert., 2005) e a Escala da Depress?o, Ansiedade e Stress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale ? Dass21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995). / Objectives: The main goal of this study was to assess the way individuals compare themselves with their peers (social ranking) and the presence of psychopathological symptoms based on the quality of affective attachments established in adolescence. At the same time, the influence of gender in the studied variables was also explored. The level of association between negative emotional states (anxiety, depression and stress) and the social ranking in adolescence was also analyzed. Methods: Our study group was composed by 174 adolescents (81 males) attending mainstream schools (2nd and 3rd level of basic education); with ages between 11 and 16 years old. To evaluate the study variables the Attachment Questionnaire for Children ? AQ-C; Sharpe et. al, 1998; The Adolescent Social Comparison Scale ? Revised-ASCS-R; Irons & Gilbert., 2005 and the Dass; Depression, Anxiety and stress Scale; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995 were used. Results: A significant difference between the 3 groups of attachments referring to the values of anxiety, depression and stress as in relation to the social comparison was noted. The adolescents with secure attachments with their peers demonstrate lower levels of anxiety related symptoms when compared to the ones with unstable attachments whether it is ambivalent or anxious. Regarding the depression and stress symptoms, the results show that the group with stable attachments differs from the one with ambivalent insecure attachments, in matter of depression and stress, showing as expected lower values. Concerning the social comparison the same pattern was found, where the group with secure attachments shows a more positive and favorable comparison with their peers than the group with ambivalent insecure attachments. The groups with insecure attachments don?t differ from each other when considering the study variables. The gender does not perform a major role, since there was not a significant difference between boys and girls, regarding the anxiety levels, stress, depression and social comparison. Finally there is a negative correlation between social comparison and depression symptoms associated to stress. Conclusion: This study allows clarification of in what way negative emotional states (anxiety, stress and depression) and comparison between peers are linked and how they can vary with the quality of attachments. In what concerns clinical implications, especially in intervention, this data highlight the relevance of the peers involvement, the need to recognize the way adolescent classify their relationships and the place they occupy in order to develop alternative ways of classification more adequate and functional. Therefore to stimulate a cooperative and sharing behavior and the development of interpersonal skills that allows the decrease of the adolescent function in matters of social ranking, might be relevant elements that could contribute for the welfare and quality of relationship with the other.
