Introduction: Be a teacher is one of the most important professions, having a very relevant role in the educational process and in the students? development. Being a profession, that where intense emotions are experienced on a daily basis provides a rationale for the interest and need to address these professionals? mental health. Objectives: The present study aimed to explore the existence of associations between stress symptoms, professional engagement and the process emotion regulation of experiential avoidance. Another objective was to explore the existence of differences between men and women and between teachers who teach different education levels regarding negative emotional symptoms, professional engagement and experiential avoidance. Method: The sample consisted of 304 teachers, 256 women (84.2%) and 48 men (15.8%), teaching in public and private schools, who completed online a sociodemographic survey and the following self-rerport instruments: Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (EADS-21), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and the Teachers Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (TAAQ-PT). Results: The stress and experiential avoidance variables showed a positive association. In turn, stress and engagement presented a negative correlation. Comparisons according to sex did not reveal statistically significant differences in any variable (p > .05). Concerning stress, there were statistically significant differences (F = 6.47; p = .002) among the teachers who taught at different education levels. Tukey's post hoc tests showed that teachers in the 1st grade of primary education (M = 7.15; SD = 4.36) had higher values than their 2nd and 3rd cycle colleagues (M = 5.56; SD = 4.10) and then colleagues who teach in secondary education (M = 4.88; SD = 4.26). Conclusion: Considering this study results, it may be hypothesized that when teachers show symptoms of stress and show psychological inflexibility this may decrease their professional engagement (dedication, absorption and vigor). Thus, targeting experiential avoidance as an emotional regulation process in interventions to reduce teachers? stress, fostering greater involvement in the profession practice may be useful.
