Resumo: | The modern amateur astronomical movement started in the last decades of the 19th century. At the time, Portugal was not immune to international developments and several national personalities have currently been known to conduct astronomical observations between 1880 and 1910. Among these, the Azorean João de Moraes Pereira (1855‐1908) stands out. Amateur astronomers were not bound by contractual obligations and, sometimes, were not even integrated in formal structures. Consequently, characterizing this community and, in particular, understanding its motivations, the work it carried out, and the interaction networks formed by its members is a complex task due to the scarcity of available information. A partial list of the contents of João de Moraes Pereira’s library we have recently discovered will allow us to document several pending questions concerning his astronomical activity, thereby enabling us a better understanding of his life and work. |

Portugal no quedó al margen de su desarrollo internacional y en la actualidad se conoce un número reducido de aficionados nacionales activos entre 1880 y 1910, entre los que cabe destacar el astrónomo azoriano João de Moraes Pereira (1855‐1908). Al realizarse la astronomía aficionada sin obligaciones contractuales y, a veces, sin estructuras formales, caracterizar a esta comunidad y, en concreto, conocer la motivación, trabajos llevados a cabo y redes de interacción de sus miembros, es un trabajo complejo debido a la escasez de informaciones de que se dispone. La relación de parte de la biblioteca de João de Moraes Pereira, que descubrimos recientemente, permite documentar algunas de las cuestiones pendientes sobre su actividad astronómica, haciendo posible de este modo un mejor conocimiento de su vida y obra.Les origines du mouvement de l’astronomie amateur actuelle remontent aux dernières décennies du XIXe siècle. Le Portugal n’a pas échappé aux développements internationaux et, actuellement, on ne connaît qu’un petit nombre d’amateurs nationaux qui étaient actifs entre 1880 et 1910, parmi lesquels se trouve l’astronome João de Moraes Pereira1880 e 1910. L’astronomie amateur se réalisant sans obligations contractuelles et, parfois, sans structures formelles, le fait de vouloir caractériser cette communauté et, en particulier, de vouloir connaître les motivations, les travaux développés et les réseaux d’interaction de ses membres devient un travail complexe, dû au manque d’informations disponibles. Le fait que l’on ait découvert le relevé d’une partie de la bibliothèque de João de Moraes Pereira permet que certaines questions, portant sur l’activité astronomique, et laisséesjusqu’alors sans réponse, puissent, désormais, être éclaircies et, ainsi, aider à ce que l’on connaisse mieux la vie et l’œuvre de cet homme.O movimento da astronomia amadora actual tem as suas origens nas últimas décadas do século XIX. Portugal não foi imune aos desenvolvimentos internacionais e, actualmente, conhece-se um número reduzido de amadores nacionais activos entre 1880 e 1910, entre os quais se salienta o astrónomo açoriano João de Moraes Pereira (1855-1908). Sendo a astronomia amadora realizada na ausência de obrigações contratuais e, por vezes, de estruturas formais, caracterizar esta comunidade e, em particular, conhecer as motivações, trabalhos desenvolvidos e redes de interacção dos seus membros é um trabalho complexo devido à escassez de informações disponíveis.
