Sociology of law in "Os Bruzundangas": reflection about the traveling narrator and the social dimension of law in Lima Barreto

Resumo: This paper discusses the importance of literature for the study of the Sociology of Law, via the work Os Bruzundangas of Brazilian novelist Lima Barreto. Lima Barreto's production stands out especially for this purpose in view of his militant literature, which is amplified in light of the realistic and autobiographical character imprinted in his productions, always combining the the collective struggle with the individual and the institutions themselves with society, a true social and practical dimension of law. To examine this dimension in Lima Barreto’s work, the paper presents a reflection on the traveling narrator of Os Bruzundangas. The paper indicates that this narrative focus makes it possible to articulate the realistic and autobiographical characters by incorporating the narrator's personal experiences, but, simultaneously, because the traveler is not the main character of the chronicles, this figure also allows the narrative of the paradoxes and tensions of the operation of Brazilian legal system in the First Republic. Moreover, the paper selects three chronicles that are part of the work for a closer examination of the social dimension of the law, namely: Constituição; Mandachuva e As eleições. The conclusive remark is to understand that Lima Barreto's vanguardism echoes as a privileged point of view of the social dimension of Brazilian law and, at the same time, represents an invitation for the study of the relationship between Sociology of Law and Literature.

La producción de Lima Barreto se destaca especialmente para este propósito por su literatura militante, que se amplifica a la luz del carácter realista y autobiográfico impreso en sus producciones, combinando siempre la lucha colectiva con la individual y las propias instituciones con la sociedad, una verdadera dimensión social y práctica del Derecho. Para examinar esta dimensión en la obra de Lima Barreto, el artículo presenta una reflexión sobre el narrador itinerante de Os Bruzundangas. El trabajo indica que este enfoque narrativo permite articular los caracteres realista y autobiográfico mediante la incorporación de las experiencias personales del narrador, pero, simultáneamente, al no ser el viajero el protagonista de las crónicas, esta figura también permite narrar las paradojas y tensiones del funcionamiento del sistema jurídico brasileño en la Primera República. Además, el trabajo selecciona tres crónicas que forman parte de la obra para profundizar en la dimensión social del derecho, a saber: Constituição; Mandachuva e As eleições. La observación conclusiva es entender que el vanguardismo de Lima Barreto resuena como un punto de vista privilegiado de la dimensión social del derecho brasileño y, al mismo tiempo, representa una invitación para el estudio de la relación entre Sociología del Derecho y Literatura.Este texto discute a importância da literatura para o estudo da Sociologia do Direito, adotando como recorte a obra de Lima Barreto Os Bruzundangas. A produção de Lima Barreto se destaca para este propósito tendo em vista sua literatura militante, que é amplificada diante do caráter autobiográfico imprimido nas suas produções, vinculando a luta coletiva com o individual e as próprias instituições com a sociedade, uma dimensão social e prática do direito. A partir de uma revisão de literatura, é examinada a dimensão social do direito via uma reflexão sobre a importância do narrador viajante de Os Bruzundangas. O texto indica que este foco narrativo possibilita a articulação do caráter realista da narrativa ao incorporar as experiências pessoais, mas, simultaneamente, o viajante possibilita também que sejam trabalhados os paradoxos e as tensões da operação do direito brasileiro da Primeira República. Na etapa final, o texto seleciona três crônicas integrantes da obra para o exame da dimensão social, a saber: Constituição; Mandachuva e As eleições.
