Arapuan shell mound: New interventions for rekindle this space

This study was initiated from the analysis of archaeological material collected at the sambaqui Arapuan site, located in the municipality of Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro coast, and under the custody of the National Museum / UFRJ. The Arapuan site is a funerary space with a high number of burials if compared to other sites in the region. By comparing the information from the field reports, that have recorded various actions since the 1970s, the records of the burials, with data from human skeletal and lithic material, adornments and ceramic fragments; and information from the collections from the technical reserves of the Biological Anthropology Sector and the Archeology Sector at National Museum, we observed the absence of much of the material collected (bones and elements of material culture), a high degree of bone fragmentation and lack of identification in the material, preventing them from being located in reports. Thus, this study aims to create subsidies to propose a series of new actions in the site, given its significant informative potential regarding the shell mound culture on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, completing a series of more consistent studies in other sites of this region.
