Euclidean Geometry and Taxicab: an concret problem and the Semiotics Representations Registers

This article presents the results of an investigation carried out with students of a professional master's degree in Mathematics Teaching, in a discipline of Analytical Geometry and Linear Algebra. The qualitative research was based on Duval's Theory of Semiotic Representation Registers and had as a question: to obtain the best solution to a problem of determining a public space, to check which Geometry presents a better result: the Euclidean or the Taxi? To answer the problem, we outline the purpose of analyzing the types of semiotic representation registers used by the students in the search for solutions in the two geometries. The results showed that some students had difficulties in obtaining the verbal registration for the conceptualization of the place searched in the Taxi Geometry and, consequently, in the conversion to the figural register. Thus, they were not able to conclude that the Geometry Taxi offers the best solution to the problem.
