Resumo: The caatinga is considered one of the richest biomes in biodiversity, although it is little known by researchers. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the level of popular knowledge about snakes among the inhabitants of São João do Piauí municipality. Thus, a public opinion questionnaire with questions about the ecological role of snakes and endemic species was developed and disseminated through social networks. It was observed that most of the population cannot identify a poisonous animal, and most of them do not know the term endemism. Thus, it is expected that this work will help demystify that every snake is dangerous, demonstrating its importance in the biological balance for ecosystems.
