E-mail: bittenc@ufrrj.br Due to expansion of sugarcane plantations and change the waste management of the ethanol industry, outbreaks fly Stomoxys calcitrans occurred in several states in Brazil. The present study aimed to identify the flies and its immature stages that develop near the animal facilities, sugarcane, parasitizing the livestock in the counties visited, check the agri-environmental determinants to population growth; description of local development of immature stages and measures for environmental control. We visited cities in the state of São Paulo (Planalto, Borá and Ouroeste) and one in the state of Minas Gerais (Frutal). In all municipalities verified the presence of the stable fly, as well as their immature stages. In places visited were checked conditions for the development of flies, particularly Musca domestica and S. calcitrans, is in the areas of plantations, mills and farming properties. Infestations by the stable fly are presented from low to medium. When the vinasse channels were not used have conditions for the development of flies, because it keeps certain level of moisture and humidity sufficient for the development of eggs, larvae and pupae. The sugarcane straw left on the soil after harvest of sugarcane, when presented damp after fertigation with vinasse, enables the development of immature stages of the stable fly. The fertigation of sugarcane should be done very carefully, because its addition to straw favors the development of the immature stages of the stable fly. To prevent outbreaks efforts should be employed by the mills and farmers, in order not to provide favorable conditions for the development of S. calcitrans.
