Resumo: In recent years, the nursing community through health education has awakened interest in more effective methods of educating patients and their families. Writing through educational materials communication has been widely used in the context of care can contribute significantly to the development of skills for self-care and reducing complications associated with the use of indwelling catheters. However, educational materials must be appropriate to the target audience so your understanding is not compromised and the proposed objectives are achieved. This study aimed to submit the educational material "Indwelling urinary catheter - Care to be taken home for the correct functioning of the urinary catheter in men" to the evaluation of men and caregivers of men who use this device at home. This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The convenience sample consisted of patients seen at a Urology Clinic and Municipal Specialty Center. Data collection was conducted through home visits, after contact via telephone for scheduling. Two instruments were used: tool for characterization of other participants and the type Likert scale for assessment of educational material, provided with questions related to written and oral illustrative information in educational materials. The study included 16 subjects, eight men and eight caregivers. Men who reviewed the educational material had a mean age of 61,2 years and 52,1 years for caregivers. The question referred to the use of bladder catheter was predominantly takes radical prostatectomy followed by urinary retention, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, stroke, spinal cord injury and neurogenic bladder. Is predominant among men and caregivers who rated the educational materials the low education level (≤ 4 years of schooling). For men all items related to educational material were positively evaluated, and the percentage agreement of 100,00% was predominant in nine items and 87,50% on an item. For caregivers, the educational material was also positively evaluated the percentage of 100,00% agreement prevailed in seven items and 87,50% on three items. The evaluation of educational material for all participants resulted in agreement equal to 100,00% in six items and 93,75% on four items. The value set for each item to be considered adequate agreement was equal to or greater than 70,00%, and at this stage all items for all participants were considered adequate. The Spearman correlation made between Topic 1 – Understanding of content and illustrations and Topic 2 – Perception of the understanding, usefulness and relevance of the information contained in written material and spoken by the researcher men who evaluated the material and caregivers who also evaluated, resulted in significant and positive, 0,79 and 0,58, respectively. It is hoped that this material can be a tool for health education activities with men and caregivers of men who use indwelling catheters at home.
