Perception of risk for HIV/AIDS of young university students in a border region under the perspective of the health beliefs model

Understand the risk perception of young university students regarding HIV/AIDS in a border region. Descriptive, qualitative study, based on the theoretical framework of the Health Belief Model. Interviews were carried out with 34 young university students from Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, between September and December 2022. Thematic analysis was chosen for data analysis, emerging four categories; perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits and perceived barriers. Young people have a low perception of risk for HIV and believe that living with HIV/AIDS is not harmful to their health. The main perceived barriers were: lack of information, low socioeconomic conditions and lack of public policies. It points to the relevance of adopting public policies specific to the young population, which prioritize sexual education in schools, guaranteeing access to information among different groups, thus contributing to reducing exposure to risk among young people.
