Resumo: In This paper it is describcd either from the epidemiological point of view and animal health policy the evolution of foot-and-mouth disease in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brasil regarding the actions and strategies adopted in 30 years of sanitary campaign against the disease. It is also analised the implications of the disease's erradication process related not only to the international frade but also those additional requirements that must be applied by the State according the Zoosanitary code issued by the Office International dos Epizooties — OIE.  Key words: Foot-and-Mouth disease, epidemiology, erradication.

Neste trabalho é descrita, sob o ponto de vista epidemiólogico e de política de saúde animal, a evolução da ocorrência da febre aftosa no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, e as ações e estratégias utilizadas em 30 anos de campanha de combate a enfermidade. São analisadas lambem as implicações do processo de erradicação tanto aquelas relacionadas ao comércio internacional de carnes, quanto as demais exigências complementares que deverão ser aplicadas no Estado de acordo com o código Zoosanitário do Escritório Internacional de Epizotias OIE.
