Resumo: This study investigates the conceptions of high school students from a public school in the North of Mato Grosso about bacteria, aiming to contribute to a reflection on the teaching and learning process of this content in the teaching of Natural Sciences and its Technologies. For data collection, an objective questionnaire was applied, based on the Linkert scale, addressing different themes related to teaching about bacteria, including: 1) Disease and health; 2) Bacteria biology; 3) Science, technology, society and environment; and 4) Teaching and education. The results indicated that students have a broad conception of the different themes involving the study of bacteria and their relationship with everyday actions, highlighting the perception of classification of bacteria in gram negative or positive (76.5%), and the presence in different ecosystem environments, as 74.4% totally disagreed that bacteria are only found in the terrestrial environment. Thus, the results verified are linked to the satisfactory teaching and learning process used in the school unit, reinforcing the importance of the teaching work, because even if most students have never seen a bacteria under the microscope, they participated in other activities, that contribute to becoming capable of associating these microorganisms with their daily lives, as well as understanding their importance to society. It is also expected that these studies contribute to discussions about the teaching and learning process in the area of microbiology, since, due to the importance of the area, the need to seek ways to encourage the learning of such contents becomes urgent, aiming at better training for high school students.
