Evaluation on the causes of school dropout in Higher Education: a case study in the Physics Degree course at the Federal Institute of Maranhão

Resumo: The escape has been identified as a serious phenomenon that takes shape as part of school failure. This research seeks to highlight the possible causes of school dropout in higher education, particularly focused on the degree course in physics at the Federal Center of Science and Technology of Maranhão (IFMA). The dropout rates of students entering the undergraduate physics course of IFMA are worrisome, just a moment that according to official figures the shortage of teachers in this area is very large. We sought to investigate the possible causes that led students to escape from the information collected from the students escaped through questionnaires and datapassed by the Board of Higher Education Institution (DESU). There were several reasons given by respondents to justify the interruption of the normal course of their studies, yet the factors identified by students as critical to their evasion of course many were seen in the literature on the subject, so it was not possible to identify a single element could be regarded as primary for the avoidance of the students investigated.

A presente pesquisa busca avaliar as possíveis causas da evasão escolar no ensino superior, em especial voltada para o curso de licenciatura em Física do Centro Federal de Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão (IFMA). As taxas de desistências dos estudantes que ingressam no curso de Física licenciatura do IFMA são preocupantes, exatamente num momento que segundo dados oficiais a carência de professores dessa área é muito grande. Buscou-se a investigação das possíveis causas que levaram os alunos à evasão a partir das informações coletadas junto aos alunos evadidos, através de aplicação de questionários e dados repassados pela diretoria de ensino superior da Instituição (DESU). Vários foram os motivos expostos pelos entrevistados para justificar a interrupção no transcorrer normal de seus estudos, muitos vistos na literatura sobre o assunto.
