Statistical Teaching in the 2nd year of Fundamental Education: an experience in a classroom with the construction of graphs and tables

This text is based on the analysis of the work carried out by a teacher of the 2nd year of Elementary School in the state education network of the state of São Paulo, participant in the research group of the Education Observatory Program, in order to verify the activities developed with the contents related to statistics, in the construction and analysis of charts and tables. The activities applied and described by the teacher were developed from the Mathematics Education Project in the initial years of Elementary Education-EMAI, of the State Secretariat of Education of the State of São Paulo. The theoretical bases for these sequences of activities were constituted from their participation in the research group of the Observatory of Education Project, collaboratively with the other participants. We used qualitative research in this work, with the case study method. We consider that, although the teacher presented gaps on the subject in its formation, both the materials available and the collective discussions in the collaborative group of studies contributed to its growth and development. As for the students' learning, the participation of the children in the activities was configured as an important way for learning to read and interpret data.
