Evaluation of Teaching Material for Portuguese as an Additional Language Based on University Students’ Specific Needs

Resumo: There is a growing demand for Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) teaching material in the academic context due to the internationalization of universities (Figueiredo, Osório e Miranda, 2016). Considering teacher preparation (Almeida Filho, 2011), it is relevant to consider whether the available materials meet the communication needs of learners (Hall, 2005; Tomlinson, 2012). Therefore, this paper aims at evaluating the most used teaching materials for PAL available in Brazil, taking into account the specific needs (Hutchinson e Waters, 1987) of a group of five foreign students at a public University. For such, this study has quali-quantitative characteristics because it considers the view of only five students, but it also quantifies the occurrence of communicative situations in order to enable the comparison of the six selected textbooks (Bortoni-Ricardo, 2008). Results show that the material met 30% of the learners needs, which points to the importance of learners’ needs analysis.

Visando ao preparo do professor (Almeida Filho, 2011), é relevante analisar, todavia, se os materiais disponíveis cumprem com as necessidades comunicativas dos aprendizes (Hall, 2005; Tomlinson, 2012). Assim, o propósito desse artigo é avaliar materiais didáticos de PLA mais usados no Brasil, tendo-se em vista necessidades específicas (Hutchinson e Waters, 1987) de um grupo de cinco estudantes estrangeiros em uma Universidade pública. Para tanto, esta pesquisa tem características quali-quantitativa porque se apoia na visão de apenas cinco estudantes, mas também quantifica ocorrências de situações comunicativas para que se possa comparar os seis materiais didáticos selecionados (Bortoni-Ricardo, 2008).
