The main objective of this ARTICLE is to explain the practice of maracatu in the city of Fortaleza as an expression and manifestation of popular culture, rich in symbolic aspects and spaces for sociability, learning and cultural integration; moments of release and contestation of the current order. The citizens relate to the city in their on ways, producing leisure and parties. The rituals that constitute it are located between the religious and profane universe, which gives more autonomy for the population to operate in these spaces. The popular manifestation presented here has as a fundamental characteristic the overlap between the sacred and the profane, whose understanding implies considering them together. It is exactly the poorly defined borders of these fields that offer scope for practices, experiences, representations, as well as fun and leisure, constituting important moments of sociability, but also of resistance and challenges.
