Padre Belchior de Pontes on the universe of newspapers serials of Campinas during the 1870 decade

Resumo: The prominent association established between Júlio Ribeiro and A Carne (1888), in part due to the tumultuous scenario of its publication, eventually obscuring his previous novel – Padre Belchior de Pontes - published at the foot of Gazeta de Campinas newspaper, between 1876 and 1877. This novel mobilized the press of São Paulo and was the subject of newspapers such as Diário de Campinas and Província de São Paulo in the form of reviews and comments, as well as in the form of ads. Newspapers, therefore, were valuable sources to insert the aforementioned book of Júlio Ribeiro on the horizon of expectations of his time, thus allowing a diachronic and synchronous analysis. In this article, we have tried to rebuild these literary experiences within the moment of their appearance.

Esse romance mobilizou a imprensa paulista e foi assunto do Diário de Campinas e d’A Província de São Paulo, tanto sob a forma de resenhas e comentários, quanto sob a forma de anúncios. Os jornais, portanto, foram fontes valiosas para inserir essa produção literária de Júlio Ribeiro no horizonte de expectativa de sua época, permitindo, assim, uma análise diacrônica e, também, sincrônica.
