Resumo: This paper analyzes the novel O vento assobiando nas gruas, by Lídia Jorge, as an example of the formal tendencies and of the critical concern in the Portuguese contemporary novel. Jorge’s narrative, especially by means of irony, questions the problematic relations of the post colonial Portuguese society with the African imigration to Portugal, and also reviews the manner in which the Portuguese identify themselves and the “Others”.
