From tutelage to protagonism: the Cassupá trajectory in Rondônia

In this opportunity, the objective is to describe the displacements experienced by the Cassupá indigenous people, between 1940 and 2013, in the state of Rondônia,border between Brazil and Bolivia. The research is based on readings of documents produced by state institutions (SPI, FUNAI and INCRA), as well as documents produced and organized by the Indians, that is, I did not carry out long fieldwork with the Cassupá. Nonetheless, in the documents prepared by the indigenous people there are explanations and questions about the lives that have been silenced in the actions of indigenous policies. The process by which the Cassupá produce, organize and re-read documents I call “narrating Cassupá”. The rupture of silence, from the writing, resounded in indigenist policies and in indigenous politics. Thus, in the case of the “Brazilian State and the Indigenous Peoples”, the research brings to discussion not only the documentation produced by State agents, but above all, it is necessary to read and listen to documented voices and narratives and selected by the Indians on the relations they deem relevant in their trajectories. The indigenous protagonism, in this case, is evidenced in the narrative Cassupá. Narrate polyphonic. The present study demonstrates this starting from the observation that this narration is an amalgam of different places and social references, is the result of the criteria chosen by the indigenous people, that is to say, it is they who speak about themselves and read documents that have spoken about them.
