Resumo: In this article, we emphasize that, inevitably, foreign language learners’ interlanguage has marks of their mother tongue. We are based on the observation of a difficulty that Brazilian learners of English have concerning the use of grammatical subjects. Based on The Principles and Parameters Theory, we assume that this difficulty is due to the difference between the languages. This theory claims that principles are universal, that is, belong to every language and are present in the mind of every human being, and parameters are characteristics established according to the input. We defend that input is essential for language acquisition and that we must, in a broad way, raise student’s awareness of the differences between the languages involved (mother tongue and foreign language), since the learning process becomes more difficult without this awareness.

Neste artigo, ressaltamos que a língua materna, de forma inevitável, deixa traços na interlíngua de aprendizes de idiomas estrangeiros. Baseamo-nos na observação de uma dificuldade de aprendizagem de estudantes brasileiros de inglês, à luz dos pressupostos da Teoria de Princípios e Parâmetros (TPP), (de N. Chomsky), que defende a idéia de que princípios lingüísticos são universais, ou seja, estão presentes nas mentes de todos os seres humanos, e que os parâmetros lingüísticos são estabelecidos a partir do input recebido.
