In this article, we emphasize that, inevitably, foreign language learners’ interlanguage has marks of their mother tongue. We are based on the observation of a difficulty that Brazilian learners of English have concerning the use of grammatical subjects. Based on The Principles and Parameters Theory, we assume that this difficulty is due to the difference between the languages. This theory claims that principles are universal, that is, belong to every language and are present in the mind of every human being, and parameters are characteristics established according to the input. We defend that input is essential for language acquisition and that we must, in a broad way, raise student’s awareness of the differences between the languages involved (mother tongue and foreign language), since the learning process becomes more difficult without this awareness.
