Use of porque – causal and explanatory contexts: A Functional Grammar Analysis

Resumo: The article discusses the use of causal conjunctions and explanatory contexts in editorials and opinion articles for newspapers. This presents concepts and examples of the Portuguese language grammar and aims to explain the different views on the conjunctions in traditional and functional perspective. The analysis and discussion have as the research corpus 100 newspaper articles selected which all occurrences of the conjunction because. From a methodology which searches for classifying data in causal and explanatory sentences and their analysis, it is concluded that artificially, using normative grammar criteria, it is possible to make this distinction, however, it is noted a indistinctness in great part of the data.

Apresenta conceitos e exemplos de gramáticas da língua portuguesa e tem como objetivo explicitar as diversas visões sobre as conjunções, em perspectiva tradicional e funcional. A análise e discussão têm como corpus de pesquisa 100 textos jornalísticos dos quais foram selecionadas todas as ocorrências com a conjunção porque.
