Analysis of virtual teachers’ perception on musical teaching through distance education

Resumo: This article presents an investigation of music teachers’ perceptions on Musical Education in distance education. Using musical perception as an analogy, the article discusses the perception of virtual music teachers upon the particularities of teaching music in distance education, considering their interactions with virtual students, tutors and teaching materials. It is a qualitative research. The methods used for data collection were online surveys and semi-structured interviews. The analyzed subjects were Musical Education teachers at the Federal University of São Carlos and data were analyzed under a theoretical reference that approaches Distance Education (EaD), Teachers Training and Musical Education. The data showed that teachers perceive themselves as courses managers, and it the virtual tutors are in charge of most of the interaction with students. Teachers also invest much more energy in planning their courses than working during the offer. Many of them realize the student as a central figure of the teaching-learning process, but believe that the interaction between everyone involved in the process is a crucial factor in Distance Education. Teachers also realize that the difference in the students’ profile in distance learning programs in relation to the ones in classroom courses may influence their teaching strategies.

Usando la percepción musical como analogía, el artículo trata de la percepción de docentes virtuales de las particularidades de la Educación Musical a distancia, considerando sus interacciones con los alumnos, tutores virtuales y material didáctico. La investigación se caracterizó como cualitativa. Los métodos utilizados para la recolección de los datos fueron cuestionarios on-line y entrevistas semiestructuradas. Los sujetos investigados fueron profesores del curso de Licenciatura en Educación Musical de la Universidad Federal de São Carlos y los datos fueron analizados bajo un referencial teórico que trata de la Educación a Distancia (EaD), Formación de Profesores y Educación Musical. Los datos señalaron que los docentes se perciben como gestores de las asignaturas, correspondiendo a los tutores virtuales la mayor parte de la interacción con los alumnos. Los docentes invierten mucho más energía en la planificación de sus asignaturas que en sus ofertas. Muchos perciben al aluno como una figura central del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, pero creen que la interacción entre todos los involucrados en el proceso es factor crucial en EaD. Los docentes perciben que la diferencia de perfil de los alumnos de cursos a distancia en relación al perfil discente de cursos presenciales influye sus estrategias pedagógicas. Este artigo apresenta uma investigação da percepção de docentes de música sobre a Educação Musical na modalidade a distância. Usando a percepção musical como analogia, o artigo aborda a percepção de docentes virtuais das particularidades de Educação Musical a distância, considerando suas interações com alunos, tutores virtuais e material didático. A pesquisa caracterizou-se como qualitativa. Os métodos empregados para a coleta dos dados foram questionários on-line e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os sujeitos investigados foram professores do curso de Licenciatura em Educação Musical da Universidade Federal de São Carlos e os dados foram analisados sob um referencial teórico que aborda Educação a Distância (EaD), Formação de Professores e Educação Musical. Os dados mostraram que os docentes se percebem como gestores das disciplinas, cabendo aos tutores virtuais a maior parte da interação comalunos. Os docentes investem muito mais energia no planejamento de suas disciplinas que em suas ofertas. Muitos percebem o aluno como uma figura central do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, mas acreditam que a interação entre todos os envolvidosno processo é fator crucial em EaD.
