Leadership, participation and construction of citizenship in popular urbanizations of Asunción, Paraguay

Resumo: This article presents the results of a qualitative study on social leadership and citizenship in popular urbanizations of Asunción, Paraguay. These urbanizations house communities excluded from the formal city, developing complex and often conflicting processes, in the construction of housing alternatives and citizen participation. The research, exploratory and descriptive, was conducted through 30 in-depth interviews with leaders of the communities of the popular urbanizations of the city of Asunción and its metropolitan area. The results obtained indicate the emergence of democratic, participatory and supportive leadership, which seeks to reduce exclusions, promote solidarity and conquer the rights of their communities, strengthening the necessary conditions for the construction of citizenship in democracy.

Estas urbanizaciones albergan a comunidades excluidas de la ciudad formal, desarrollando procesos complejos y muchas veces conflictivos, en la construcción de alternativas habitacionales y de participación ciudadana La investigación tuvo un alcance exploratorio y descriptivo, fueron realizadas 30 entrevistas en profundidad a líderes de las comunidades de las urbanizaciones populares de la ciudad de Asunción y su área metropolitana.
