Resumo: O artigo analisa a implantação do projeto modernizador na Província Maranhense durante a Experiência Regencial no Brasil (1831-1840). No âmbito das diferentes frentes do projeto, recortamos, para análise, a montagem e a desmontagem das instituições liberais durante a Regência no Maranhão, as tentativas para encontrar um formato “moderno” para a construção das instituições e das legislações geral e provincial.
