This is a thesis about different biographies of the sex hormone testosterone in men. Through life history interviews with twenty-one testosterone users, it was intended to demonstrate the intricacies of men s interaction with the hormone, under different presentations and for different purposes. The theoretical perspective was based on the gender studies, especially men s and masculinities studies, and in the social studies of science and technology, with emphasis on the process of molecularization. We sought to locate testosterone in three supposed dichotomies, namely, natural versus artificial; legal versus illegal; and control versus autonomy. In the first part, a social history of the hormone, we searched for a genealogy of testosterone in its most fully scientific sense, reflecting on the intricate relationships between sciences, scientific truths, and the production of legitimacy. In the second part, conjoint biographies of the hormone, the analysis focused on the reports of men, on their search mechanisms for testosterone; on their perception of its different effects over their body and their masculinity; and on the social interactions and manipulations of the stigma related to the use, approximating different experiences of corporalities and masculinities. The findings point to an ability of testosterone to exhibit specific attributes of the hegemonic masculinity, understood as composing an idea of virility, and to the appeal of biotechnologies as a preferred pathway in body modification processes.
