The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the psychoanalytic clinic with the elderly. The present work is the result of the a posteriori effects of the experience of listening to the elderly in a geriatric outpatient clinic. Throughout this research, we will try to point out aging as something unique and the discomfort inherent in this process. Old age will be analyzed in the light of psychoanalysis, which in its early days contraindicated the psychoanalytic care of elderly patients. Despite this, Sigmund Freud throughout the development of psychoanalytic theory developed clinical elements that made it possible for these subjects to be listened. We will also address the issue of mourning, a trait present in the old age clinic. In our psychoanalytic listening we came across statements marked by suffering, resulting from significant losses. Mourning in Freudian theory is addressed as a reaction to the loss of an object. The experience of losses is complex for the psyche and the mourning work becomes necessary for the symbolic elaboration of this singular experience. Among the many losses that old age encompasses, memory loss is a great source of suffering for many elderly and their family members. In this research, we will analyze what scientific discourse says about the dementia process and what psychoanalytic thinking says about memory and its subjectivity. Throughout the dissertation, we will highlight the importance of the psychoanalytic device in the listening of the elderly, as a privileged means of elaborating mourning.
