The thesis presented discusses the theoretical, methodological and historical foundations providing substance and controversies to the contemporary debate about the professional activity of the Social Worker. Being Social Service a profession inserted in the social and technical division of work, the professional practice is comprehended as work in the face of the condition of wage earning by social workers. It has been about a decade that this professional practice, required as work, began to be questioned by a small nucleus of interlocutors that understand the profession from a revolutionary political prism, without learning the necessary mediations of the concrete social reality, for an ethical-political stage to be effectuated. Thus, for this nucleus, what the social work does is social praxis or ideology, having as theoretical and methodological foundation, George Lukács, including here, the concept of work. This controversy unchained the object of study present at this thesis: to recover in Marx, Lukács and Gramsci, the concepts of work, ideology and praxis, involved in the debate and putting them in analysis to allege that Marx and Lukács have differentiated conceptions, because they have different objects and goals, and to point out Gramsci`s approximation to Marx, which implies in the ethical-political, theoretical-methodological and operative-technical direction of the profession.
