This work aims to make an analytical study of João Cabral's poetics in The Death and Life of Severino under different dimensions, evaluating the aesthetic project of the author, the socio-political view of the work and its contributions in search of a national identity based on the singularity of the writer’s view of the regional environment indicated in the poem. In this regard, it was sought to promote an analysis of studies that postulated João Cabral's aesthetic method, based on the theories of Antonio Carlos Secchin, João Alexandre Barbosa and Luiz Costa Lima, indicating the anti-lyric composition of João Cabral's poetry and considering the traces of the author's concreteness on the aesthetic aspect. The role of representativeness of the Northeastern man, pointed out from semiotic analysis, and how this representativeness can contribute to the construction of social paradigms that make possible the exclusion of these subjects is one of the guidelines discussed through the eyes of Antonio Candido, Benedito Nunes and José Guilherme Merchior when they postulate analytical criteria about literature and social life. In sequence, the assumptions of Durval Diniz de Albuquerque Júnior about national regionalism will serve as a contribution to problematize the Northeast and the Northeastern man, and as well as the unfolding of these references to the constitution of a Brazilianness starting from the author's regional gaze.
