This dissertation subscribe the story of present characters in the streets of Rio de Janeiro city: informal workers. A story of the difference that these individuals, by affecting and been affected by urban control and by society, produced (and still do) in the "carioca" urbe, is what is proposed. The privileged moment is the period after the slavery abolition as a period of tension between discontinuity (end of labour slavery) and continuity (small professions malformed despite the classification of payed professions); and, yet, marked by the modernization of the city (hygienic and urban reforms done by the Rodrigues Alves and Pereira Passos governments). To fully understand them, i'll work on some lsentences produced about them: the historiographical (searches that involves this topic), legal (through Contravention of vagrancy and its recurrence article 399 and 400 of the 1890 Criminal Code) and the caricature (two albums titled Scenes lofife in Rio, Raul Pederneiras). What tails about informal workers compose the memory of the city? By comparing them, why and what are the similarities and differences between these sentences? What interfaces between them, the urban control and passersby were possible?
