This dissertation proposes a rereading of the female characters in The Waves (1931) by Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) from an interpretive methodology of colors and a conversation with Woolf's past, especially as narrated and fictionalized in “A Sketch of the Past” (1939-1940). In conversation with Woolf scholarship, the blossoming of Virginia Woolf's poetics will be investigated in order to guide this reading of The Waves, her play-poem, and also to inspire the creation of a painting-tribute, which produces a conversation between Adeline Virginia Stephen and Virginia Woolf; between the “I” and Woolf’s characters; between the writer from the past, Woolf (immortalized by her creation), her future readers and the writer from the present. To accomplish this task, this dissertation relies on critics, biographers and contemporary thinkers who have mapped the modernist aesthetics of Woolf’s fiction and its connection to the visual arts, to poetry and to gender politics, thus rescuing the buried but living poet who was Shakespeare's sister, as described by Woolf in A Room of One’s Own (1929), to think of human plunges into art; the human depths in the streams of life
